It was a full house ... and then some, for Libs Elliott event

 Libs Elliott zoomed into the afternoon online meeting for Bay of Quinte Modern Quilt Guild today. It was great to share our event with visitors from across the country. 

Libs shared her process in the design of her quilts, gave us a history of where she started in her quilting journey and we learned about the path she took to where she is today with her work. 

We were even treated to a tour of her new studio space before her visit ended. Many thanks to the attendee who thought to ask her for that favour!

Libs Elliott is known for using computer code and algorithms to create her random quilt pat-terns.
Libs will discuss her ongoing exploration of how technology can transform a traditional craft in-to modern, functional art.

She will show examples of her work and give at-tendees a peek into her design process.

Elizabeth (Libs) Elliott is a textile artist and designer exploring the intersection of technology and traditional craft by using generative design to build handmade quilts. A deep appreciation for craftsmanship, design history and future-focused applications are all reflected in her work. She studied Material Art & Design at OCAD University and received a B.A. in Cultural Studies at Trent University. Her commissions include work for individuals and corporate clients such as Absolut Vodka. She has exhibited her work and done speaking engagements internationally. She designs fabric collections for Andover Fabrics, Inc. Her work has been cov-ered by press such as Gizmodo.com, Design Milk and Casa Vogue Brazil. She lives and works in Toronto, Canada. Libs doesn't 'look like a quilter' (whatever that means).

Krista Hennebury - Visits Bay of Quinte Modern Quilt Guild

Krista Hennebury is a geologist by training and quilter by choice. She's been quilting since 2000 in her small home studio near Vancouver, B.C.  She blogs about her work and travels at ...

Passionate about sharing her love of quilting with others and fostering community through stitching together, Krista established a successful day-retreat business in 2005.

She is a popular teacher and presenter at both general and modern guilds across Canada and internationally, including an Alaska cruise, Australia, Sweden, the U.S., Scotland, England and at QuiltCanada 2019. 

Krista makes traditionally-informed modern quilts using designer prints, solids, linen and retired clothing.  Her original patterns have been published in Stitch, Australian Homespun, Quilters Connection, Simply Moderne and Quilt Now magazines. 

An active member of the MQG, CQA and her local general guild, Krista has had one or more quilts juried into QuiltCon and Quilt Canada since 2014 and won awards at both shows.

Her book of retreat-inspired projects Make It, Take It was published by Martingale in 2015 and she’s twice been a guest on American Patchwork & Quilting Podcast with Pat Sloan. 

Krista is delighted that her quilt “Chess on the Steps” appears in Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century published in 2017 by the Modern Quilt Guild and “Blackbird Fly” appears in Thomas Knauer’s Why We Quilt, 2019.

Building blocks to independence - December 2019 Meeting

Peta Hall visited our meeting to receive donations of quilt blocks to take to her project in Ghana - the Atoko Vocational Training Institute - so that the women attending the institute can learn to make their own quilt blocks and designs.

Peta gave us a brief outline of the history of the school/vocational training centre. Core subjects as well as vocations are taught at the school.

The age of students ranges from early teens to early 30’s. The goal is for the students to get training for themselves, and to then receive further education for their children. There have been two graduation groups so far from this school, and some have gone on to university or other further training. Although the project began on a small scale, it now has government‐paid staff and is sustainable.

Peta’s main interest is the women who are enrolled in the dressmaking stream. She wishes to encourage these women to expand their skills beyond dressmaking. All the women have a keen design and colour sense, and Peta is sure that if shown how, they can further their horizons. The next step is a four‐week workshop, starting small and simple, using strips, then squares and then moving on to more elaborate designs, then to make quilts - Dream Big Fibre Art is the offshoot. There is the desire to make this project self‐sustaining, with sales in the area, city hotels, gift shops, and online.

Our group was happy to be a part of this initiative!

Ideas for elves - November 2019 meeting

November's meeting was informative. Lyne Lusk brought ideas for relatively quick DIY Christmas gifts, or ornaments, or gift tags, while Sarah showed a couple of ideas for easy, kid‐friendly ornaments from Pinterest.

Anne Fales brought her silk log cabin‐based quilt for display. It is a work of art! Other interesting items brought in ranged from waxed produce wraps and bags to ornaments to “orange the world”.

disappearing act ...

On November 16, 2019 members from both the Bay of Quinte Modern Quilt Guild and Prince Edward County Quilt Guild attended a workshop teaching variations of the Double Disappearing Nine-Patch block by BQMQG President Bill Stearman. Bill brought sample quilts using many of his variations of the block. Workshop participants received several of Bill's detailed patterns and his FABULOUS hand-dyed fabric in kits as part of their workshop fee.

Lyne Lusk offered coffee and tea, as well as treats for refreshment at the Ameliasburgh Town Hall, (meeting place of the BOMQG) and participants visited over their brown bag lunches.

Guild challenge - A block-based wall hanging

Deadline:  February Meeting

The finished challenge pieces will be a guild special presentation in the Prince Edward County Quilters Guild Quilt Show July 11 and 12, 2020, at the Community Centre in Wellington.

Guidelines for this challenge:

• A block-based modern quilt, which has one universal block that repeats itself. 
• It can change size or colour in the setting. 
• It can be set any way the maker likes, except in a traditional setting.
• It can have a border.
• It may not have a border.
• It can be asymmetrically set.
• It can be cropped.
• It can be made in solid colours.
• It can be made with batiks.
• It can be made with bright, modern fabrics.
• You can make it any size, as long as it is at least 30” X 30”, maximum perimeter 160”.
